A year full of surprises for TV
Like every year, 2015 too will hold its share of surprises for audiences. What we can predict, however, is this:
With filmmakers entering the TV circuit, the technical nuances have gone up a notch and TV directors have to come up with techniques to match up to their standards. So production values will be upgraded. However, there will be a decline in the trend of filmmakers coming to small screen because except for a few names, no one did really well in 2014.
With social media bringing the audience and the TV show makers closer, the latter will have to ensure their shows suit the audience’s taste and not their own fancies.
TV channels will have to decide whether they are conceptualising shows to make money, satisfy their egos or are making a show for an audience, as people from all over India even from remote towns are constantly on a vigil about the kind of content they are consuming. Indianising western shows and adapting shows will be a successful trend if makers are clear about the concept and make it relatable to Indian sensibilities.
Short series will sprout and disappear depending on the audience’s taste.
Weekend programming and afternoon slots has always been an experimental zone for channels. More of episodic-themed weekenders will be in limelight.
On soaps, modern families will be the focus. The traditional angle where only the women’s perspective was shown will change; in 2015, you could see a male angle.
The biggest beneficiaries of 2015 will be the audience. As the makers fill their plates with plethora of thriller, drama, horror, reality and youth based content. It will be a year for the masses from all age groups and TV will no longer be segmented into shows for women, men and children, there will be family entertainers. Reality shows will have to work hard to be non monotonous.
