Trai fixes 3G spectrum price at Rs 2,720 crore, auction in February.

The price is 19 per cent lower than what operators paid for the 3G spectrum in 2010

New Delhi: Telecom operator Trai on Wednesday recommended a base price of Rs 2,720 crore per megahertz for the auction of pan-India 3G spectrum which is expected to start in February. This is around 19 per cent lower than what operators paid for the 3G spectrum in 2010. Due to aggressive bidding in 2010, the telecom operators had paid Rs3,350 crore per Mhz for 3G spectrum.

Trai recommended that the telecom department should put additional 15 Mhz for auction, which has to be obtained in exchange of spectrum that is with the defence services. The regulator reiterated its recommendations that spectrum in the 2100 MHz band should be put to auction along with 800 and 900 MHz bands. It also recommended auction of spectrums given to STel in three areas.
