Haveri model: Less booze, more roti
Hubballi: People of around 25 villages in Haveri taluk are welcoming the New Year in a unique way by shunning alcohol and the usual revelry.
Around 5,000 families of these villages consume jowar rotis, sweets and other delicious dishes together on January 1. They voluntarily contribute these eatables which are being stored at Veerabhadreshwar temple situated in the heart of Haveri town.
The head of Hukkeri Math has taken the initiative in this regard to build a special bond among the villagers. They are trying to ward off untouchability through the celebration as the social evil is still rampant in North Karnataka.
Jowar rotis are prepared in every household in several villages including Kolenur, Nelogal, Kanavalli, Sangur, Devihosur situated in Haveri taluk.
More than one lakh rotis distributed by these villagers have been stored in Veerabhadreshwar temple since the last few days.
The villagers took the rotis to the temple in a grand procession of decorated tractors, bullock carts. People from Hindu, Muslim and Jain communities are actively taking part in the celebration.
“We celebrate the New Year by consuming food together to set an example of harmony. We also pay tribute to Shivabasava Swamiji and Shivalinga Swamiji who had served the people as head of Hukkeri Mutt,” said Sadashiv Swamiji spearheading the campaign.
