SpiceJet extends flight cancellation period
New Delhi: Hundreds of SpiceJet flights will remain grounded even in Jaunuary despite the government extending a helping hand.According to civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, the cash-strapped airline will need to resolve its financial problems on its own.” However, the minister said the government “can be helpful”.
The government may also insist that SpiceJet shows about Rs 200 core in its bank balance by December 31 and either partially or wholly clear dues it owes to the state-owned AAI by Wednesday.
Officials speaking on behalf of SpiceJet in New Delhi said that the airline will continue to operate 230 flights as part of its revised schedule on a daily basis in January as well, which means that about 115 flights daily from its earlier schedule (of 345 flights daily) will continue to be cancelled in January as well.
This means the figure of cancelled flights in January may be over a whopping 3,000. However, news agency reports from Chennai stated that over 300 flights have been cancelled by the airline next month till January 31, 2015, adding that at least 329 flights have been affected in January as part of the cancellations.
