India summons Pakistan envoy over Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi bail
Islamabad/New Delhi: India said there seems to be no end in sight to Pakistan remaining a safe haven for well known terror groups.
In New Delhi, foreign secretary Sujatha Singh summoned Pakistan high commissioner Abdul Basit while the Indian high commission in Islamabad also raised the matter with the Pakistan foreign office.
A senior official of the Pakistan interior ministry told news agencies in Islamabad that Pakistan may detain Lakhvi, now being held at Adiala Jail, in another case.
In New Delhi, external affairs ministry sources said the foreign secretary had “conveyed India’s strong concern at the lack of effective action by Pakistan’s prosecuting authorities after the anti-terrorism court ordered the release of internationally-designated terrorist Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, whose involvement in the Mumbai terror attack is well known”.
An Indian official said, “We expect the government of Pakistan to abide by the commitment conveyed to us that expeditious steps would be taken to bring all those responsible for the hei-nous acts of terrorism in Mumbai to justice.”
“It was extremely disturbing that despite the assurances we have been receiving over the last six years, and the recent tragedies in Pakistan, there seems to be no end in sight to P
Pakistan remaining a safe haven for well-known terror groups,” he added. In Islamabad, the Pakistan government’s law officer did not turn up for the court hearing on Monday.
The court directed the government to file a reply in this regard at the next hearing on January 15.
