Chain snatchings, murders decline
Hyderabad: Although there is an increase in the total crime rate, cases of murder, chain-snatching and use of narcotics have come down significantly in the twin cities.
Apart from rape, other cases of crime against women also have shown a declining trend. Top cops say that efforts to curb these crimes have proved effective this year.
“Offences like murder for gain, murder, snatching, pseudo police, diverting attention, automobile and other thefts decre-ased compared to last year.
We curbed the interstate shutter lifting gangs of Bihar, pseudo police and the Irani gangs of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh successfully,” said police commissioner Mahender Reddy.
The commissioner said the Hyderabad City Police team raided remote areas in Bidar, Gulbarga, Anantapur and other crime areas despite heavy odds.
“As a result, Irani gangs have not operated in the city since the last 15 months and Bihar shutter lifting gangs have not visited us in the last 18 months,” said Mr Reddy.
The commissioner said the police detected 26 NDPS cases and arrested 60 people including 22 foreigners this year. The police recovered 166 grams of cocaine, six ecstasy pills, 200 bundles of khat leaves and other narcotic substances.
The commissioner said that the launching of SHE teams to prevent eve teasing in the city has been effective. This year, the police booked rowdies under the PD Act.
The cops have also taken measures to close down gambling clubs in the city. The police also started cordon and search operations to keep a close watch and check on inter-state criminals operating in the city.
