A touch of beauty to fight plastic menace

Small holes will be made at the sides of the bottles before filling them with soil mixed with manure

KOCHI: Tired with the heaps of plastic water bottles left behind by commuters in trains and stations, a group of railway employees have decided to solve the menace in an innovative way.

Nearly 20 staff of the Aluva railway station collects the leftover mineral water bottles daily basis and recycle them for growing flowering plants.

“We’ve done this after our requests fell to deaf ears. We now hope to showcase the beautiful ‘garden’ and ask commuters too to do the same by keeping the plastic bottles with them rather than throwing it in tracks and trains,” said C Balakrishnan, Aluva station Manager.

Small holes will be made at the sides of the bottles before filling them with soil mixed with manure. The campaign kicked off last week and the railway staff has successfully planted 80 sprouts.

They are now planning to set up a large vessel at the station to facilitate commuters dump the plastic bottles.
