Govt stand sought on closing Bevco outlets along National highway

Government had decided to close down ten percent of the beverages outlets along the highways

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Friday sought state government's stand on a plea challenging the latest government order to cut down the number of beverages outlets along the national highway and state highways in the state.

Justice Anil K. Narendran sought the state's stand on a plea filed by K. Antony, an employee of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation, and four others who challenged the government order passed on December 20.

In the latest order, the government had decided to close down ten percent of the beverages outlets along the highways annually. This was made pursuant to a High Court directive.

The petitioners contended that the High Court had asked the state to shift the outlets and not to close them down.

The petitioners argued that they would be put into trouble if the state went ahead with the plan and sought a directive to stay the order.
