Cold kills 12, fog hits rail services in North India
New Delhi: Intense cold wave swept across north India on Thursday and, coupled with dense fog, affected normal life across the region and led to the death of 12 persons nine in Uttar Pradesh and three in Punjab. Also, train services continue to be affected due to dense fog cover in the morning and evening.
As many as 115 trains were delayed, while over 90 of them were rescheduled on Thursday after heavy fog disrupted the routine services of the railways.
Hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh reeled under temperatures below the freezing point, while dense fog in the plains caused low visibility affecting flight operations and delaying around 100 trains.
Over 50 trains were cancelled by the railways on Thursday due to foggy weather. The railways, as per the annual feature, had already cancelled a number of trains for a few weeks.
The railways in a media statement stated that as many as 89 trains were rescheduled on Thursday. Also, the arrival of 91 trains to the national capital were delayed after dense fog covered Delhi. The Met department said visibility slumped to 100 metres on Thursday morning.
