Ex-Advocate general C V Mohan Reddy seeks probe against Vijayawada police

AP told to respond by December 30
Hyderabad: Former advocate-general C.V. Mohan Reddy on Wednesday urged Justice Vilas V. Afzulpurkar of the Hyderabad High Court to order a probe through a district judge into the alleged high-handed behaviour of Vijayawada city cops and their unnecessary interference in civil disputes.
Justice Vilas V. Afzulpurkar was hearing a contempt case moved by Tanikonda Chiranjeevi, a lawyer from Vijayawada, seeking to punish police commissioner A.B. Venkateshwar Rao and his subordinate police officers for wilfully disobeying the court orders.
Mr Mohan Reddy, appearing for the petitioner, brought to the notice of the judge a recent ruling of a division bench declaring Vijayawada police’s “Operation Night Domination” as unconstitutional.
“Incidentally, the petitioner herein moved a PIL against the action of the police and succeeded in getting a stay; Since then the police is trying to implicate him in false cases,” he added.
He submitted that local police officer locked the premises the petitioner’s flat in Moghalrajpuram, which he had purchased, and also booked a case. The former AG said, “It is not an isolated case; We received several information with regard to interference of the Vijayawada police in civil disputes in view of booming of real estate business in the name of building the new capital.”
Citing several verdicts passed earlier with regard to interference of police in civil disputes, Mr Mohan Reddy urged the court to take a serious view on the issue. The judge directed the counsel representing the home department of Andhra Pradesh to spell out the stand of the police on allegations of the petitioner by December 30.
