Steps to rein in encroachers at Ernakulam bus depot
Kochi: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has decided to fine shopkeepers, who have encroached on pedestrian space at the Ernakulam depot.
Deccan Chronicle had on Monday reported the problems that commuters faced owing to the shopkeepers displaying their wares outside their allotted rooms and aggressively trying to sell them to passersby.
“A special squad led by Administrative Officer, K C Venugopal measured the encroachments by each of the eight shopkeepers and we’ll fine them based on this. And if they continue to encroach, we will seek police help to evict them,” said Mr P Sasidharan, Chief Traffic Officer, Ernakulam.
“The eight shops at the depot have been given space on lease for a year after competitive bidding. Their owners are supposed to display their wares in the rooms leased to them and not encroach on the walkway in front. However, despite giving notices, they have blatantly violated this condition,” said an officer of the depot.
