BJP says it can do well in Punjab without Akalis

INLD was the main target of the BJP leadership

New Delhi: The BJP is confident of doing well in Punjab without the Akalis.

“The BJP will do to the Akalis what it did to the Shiv Sena,” a saffron leader said. Assembly elections are due in Punjab in 2017.

Making the game plan somewhat evident, state BJP chief Kamal Sharma, in Chandigarh, demanded Mr Majithia ousted.

He said: “Senior leaders such as Advani had stepped down on moral grounds. Akali ministers Sarwan Singh Phillaur and Gulzar Singh Ranike were also made to put in their papers. Majithia should quit in the interests of a free and fair probe.”

Mr Sharma added that the BJP feels “it will be good for the image of the government to make the minister resign”. The ED has served summons on Mr Majithia in connection with a drug racket case.

A former policeman, Jagdish Singh Bhola, has allegedly named Mr Majithia as being involved in the drug trade in Punjab.

It could be recalled that the Akali Dal had campaigned for Om Prakash Chautala’s INLD during the Haryana Assembly elections, when the INLD was the main target of the BJP leadership.
