‘Not an item number, but a special song’

She has also sung the song Joganniyan in Tevar

Among the present generation actresses, Shruti Haasan is one of the few one can truly call multitalented. A singer, actress and a dancer, Shruti has no problems transforming from one role to another.

Talking about her “item number” Madamiyan that has been steadily climbing the charts, Shruti says, “It’s a special song. Not item number.” She has also sung the song Joganniyan in Tevar, which has been picturised on Sonakshi Sinha. “I have been singing since I was six. I started off as a singer, so for me, it’s not a big deal if I’m singing for myself or for someone else,” she says.

Maybe that’s the reason why she was approached for the song first. “I recorded the song first and later, Arjun called me back for Madamiyan,” she says.

“Be it Tollywood, Bollywood or Kollywood, I have never separated the three. It’s about entertaining. The only difference exists in the regions and the units,” she says.

Having done item numbers in Aagadu and then in Tevar, does she feel there’s a difference in the perception of these songs in the two industries? “I think the people in Bollywood are more open-minded when it comes to such dance numbers,” says Shruti.

Currently, Shruti is busy shooting for her upcoming Tollywood film with Mahesh Babu. Talking about it, she says, “It’s a very interesting film. The character I play is very different. Our director Koratala Shiva is very nice as well and of course, working with Mahesh is great.”

Shruti’s sister, Akshara will soon be debuting with Shamitabh. Did she have any advice for her little sister? “She’s a smart girl and will figure it out on her own. Moreover, we never talk about work at home. It doesn’t crop up in our dinner-time conversations or anything,” she says.
