No significant decline in road accidents

Hyderabad: Despite booking lakhs of cases every year against traffic rule violators, there is no significant decline in the number of accidents. As many as 2,303 mishaps were reported till November in 2014, against the 2,294 accidents reported in 2013. Except drunken driving no other violation is seriously dealt with by the police.

Road safety experts say that police needs to spruce up deterrence techniques. “For example if organisations like Credit Information Bureau Ltd is given data about traffic violators, they can use it for fixing loan eligibility.

A bank should verify the CIBIL record on a person’s traffic violations,” said road safety expert P. Suresh Raju. Another way is to cancel the driving licence of the repeat offender.

“We are now building a database to track repeat offenders. A driver with a certain number of traffic violations will lose his driving licence.

In drunk driving cases, we have already cancelled a few licenses,” said A.V. Ranganath, DCP-2 of traffic police.
