Doctor taken to task for apathy
Vijayawada: G. Shyam Kumar, a five year old boy, who was attacked by three dogs, also had to face the apathy of the doctors and the nurses of the Government General Hospital.
The incident sparked tension in the area and health minister Kamineni Srinivas reached the hospital within 15 minutes and suspended the on-duty doctor, who was not present at that time.
G. Mariyamma, the boy’s mother said, “Some doctors asked us to wash the injuries with soap. One nurse asked us to wait for the nurse of the next shift, while another asked us to go to Guntur Hospital.”
Shyam, a resident of Rotary Nagar, was dragged by three dogs when he went out to urinate in an open place near Kabela on Sunday. Locals rescued him and informed the family members. Immediately, he was taken to the hospital. But he did not receive prompt care.
However, receiving the information of minister’s visit, the doctors hurriedly gave the boy an anti-rabies Vaccine and said that they didn’t have the immuno globulin injection. Dr. U. Surya Kumari, Superintendent, said, “The government has not been supplying the injection for a long time.”
After suspending the duty doctor, minister Mr Srinivas said, “We are unable to change the inhumane behaviour of the staff in government hospitals.”
