Sharara is in: Designers favour the new trend

The kurta now has a new accomplice the sharara

If you have been wondering how to glam up your traditional look, why not experiment with a long kurta with a sharara or ghagra ensemble that seems to be the favourite of all this season.

Whether it is for a casual dinner or a grand reception, a fitted kurta with a free flowing ghagra seems to be the new talk of the town. Twinkle Khanna was the latest to be spotted wearing a similar outfit at a recent do; many stars too have been sporting the look.

Designers are all in favour of the style. Designer Ridhi Mehra who herself has been experimenting with the look, says, “The look is trending in a big way.

An ensemble with a long kurta that resembles a jacket with a sharara is everyone’s favourite now. It all depends on the occasion and the personality of the one wearing it be it a highly embellished one or a light outfit.

While the heavily embroidered long jacket can be a winner at all times, you can also experiment and go for a short jacket or a peplum top with the ghagra.”

When it comes to experimenting, designer Nachiket Barve has a few do’s and don’ts. “There’s a certain amount of stagnation when it comes to experimenting with Indian wear.

But you always want to take it a notch ahead and there comes in the long fitted jacket with the ghagra. Keep in mind that this look suits taller people better.

It’s all about creating a fine balance depending on the occasion that you are wearing the outfit for. If you are opting for a highly embellished ghagra, a good idea would be to go for a transparent or sheer jacket or a well fit open jacket.

When it comes to colours, I think opting for tonal colours with muted pastels is safer than going in for crazy sharp contrasts,” he says.

Another look that is a take off from this one is the three-layered ensemble with the long jacket, crumpled skirt and straight fit pants beneath them. But designers say it creates confusion.

“Too much of volume doesn’t suit the Indian body type. It’s best to stick to a single layer or two layer clothing. Either the jacket should be fitted or it should be a loose one with tight fit pants,” says Nachiket.
