Insurance Bill not tabled due to ruckus in Rajya Sabha

It is learnt the government will try to introduce the Bill in the next few days

New Delhi: The Union government decided not to table the Insurance Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as the Upper House continued to witness pandemonium over the Opposition’s demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply on conversion issue.

It is learnt the government will try to introduce the Bill in the next few days.

The Insurance Amendment Bill, that seeks to hike the FDI ceiling in insurance from 26 per cent to 49 per cent, was expected to be tabled in the Upper House on Tuesday.

The Bill is facing trouble as regional parties like the Trinamool, JD(U) and the Samajwadi Party have already expressed opposition. While the government does not have adequate numbers in the Upper House, it is learnt the Congress has given its tacit support to the Bill, paving the way for this long-pending economic reform measure.

The Rajya Sabha in fact failed to transact any business for the second consecutive day. The House was adjourned six times during the day.

Amid the din, the Upper House was adjourned for the day at 2.30 pm, but not before deputy chairman P.J. Kurien ticked off the slogan-shouting members, saying he was “sorry for the indiscipline.”
