IIT-Guwahati dean held for rape of staff
Guwahati: The Assam Police on Tuesday arrested the dean of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati Aloke Kumar Ghoshal on charges of raping his assistant in the chemical engineering department of the college.
The senior superintendent of city police Anand Prakash Tiwari, who was supervising the investigation after the victim approached him, said, “We have arrested the IIT professor Mr Ghoshal on Tuesday after a thorough investigation of the case”.
Informing that police have prima-facie evidence of sexual assault with the victim, Mr Tiwari said, “We need custodial interrogation of the accused professor so he was arrested under the section 376 of IPC”.
Pointing out that IIT-Guwahati management has also been informed about the arrest, he said that Mr Ghoshal seems to be a habitual offender. The police have also recorded the statement of the victim in front of a magistrate.
