AIB to 'roast' Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh

Unflattering jokes will be hurled at two as they take it with a pinch of salt
Mumbai: After acquainting audiences with stand-up and improv comedy apart from their comic sketches, the All India Bakchod boys are setting out to present what has so far, been a largely foreign concept — insult comedy. Taking a cue from Comedy Central’s Roast, the AIB Knockout Roast will set the stage for a bold and hilariously edgy exchange between roasters AIB, the roast master Karan Johar, panellists Rajeev Masand and Raghu Ram and the “roastees”, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh where everybody on stage will hurl unflattering jokes and comments about the two actors while they sit and take it all in with a smile and of course, a pinch of salt. Previous roastees include Donald Trump, James Franco, Snoop Dog, Pamela Anderson and Charlie Sheen to name a few.
The jokes are going to be explicit and no-holds-barred, we’ve been warned. “Luckily for us, Arjun and Ranveer have already made a few terrible decisions in the their career, so there’s a lot of scope for us to take off on that,” says Gursimran Khamba in jest adding that the jokes would revolve around everything from Arjun’s obesity as a kid to the homoerotic vibes the two actors share apart from the bad films they’ve signed. The jokes will be the meanest and the most evil you’d have heard about them.” There is one self-imposed condition though. “There’ll be no jokes for the sake of being evil or nasty — it has to be funny or rooted in truth to make sense. Saying nasty things for the heck of it only brings in a negative vibe on stage,” adds Khamba.
So how did they zero in on the two roastees? “Arjun and Ranveer are from the same generation as us and have grown up watching the comedy that we have. They are both very easy to work with and it took five minutes to convince them to come on board,” says Ashish Shakya. What makes the appearance even more special is that they’re not here to promote a film, he points out. “Stars usually appear on shows with a certain agenda — either to promote a show or a product. Since this is neither and entirely in the interest of comedy and of course charity, it makes the association even more interesting,” he adds.
Getting on board roast master Karan Johar and panellists Rajeev Masand and Raghu Ram was also an easy choice for the boys. Since the roast master usually sets the tone for the show (played by Seth Mcfarlane and Drew Carey in the international concept) and is someone who can get away with saying pretty much anything, KJo, the big daddy of Bollywood, made for an excellent choice. “Besides, he is naturally funny and snarky, which is something we realised during the Alia Bhatt video we shot with him. As for Raghu, he is one person who nobody gives it back to. For all those people who’ve watched Roadies, we though it’d be fun to see him getting his a** kicked since the panellists get roasted too. With Rajeev Masand (film critic), we just had to ask him to do what he does anyway only this time on stage. So it all came together very beautifully,” Khamba says.
