Hyderabad cops chain teen for ‘cellphone theft’

Activists said minors should not be brought to police station and should never be chained

Hyderabad: With the picture of a 13 year old boy chained in the Chandrayangutta police station, South Zone senior police officials said this act was against the law and an inquiry had been started in this regard.

Child right activists said that minors should not be brought to the police station and should never be chained.

“If a minor commits an offence and is caught, the cops should approach him in plain clothes and take him to the juvenile office.

The minor should never be taken to police station. The act of the Chandrayangutta police is a serious child rights’ violation,” said a child right activist.

South Zone DCP V. Satyanarayana said that an inquiry has been initiated regarding the issue.

“An ACP level officer has already started a probe into the issue. The report will be submitted in a few hours.

An action will be initiated as per the report,” said South Zone DCP V. Satyanarayana .

Police said that the boy had stolen a mobile phone from a woman in the neighbourhood. The neighbours handed him over to the police station after finding the phone in his possession.

Sources from Chandrayangutta said that the boy was found possessing a stolen high-end mobile phone and they brought him to the police station for interrogation. “He was brought to the police station and kept inside. In order to restrain him, they chained his legs,” said the journalist who had clicked the photograph.

The boy told the police that he had not stolen the phone and someone from his locality had given it to him a few days ago.

“He said his acquaintance had given him the phone. Police detained him to get the details of the original thief,” sources said.

Meanwhile, the State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights directed the commissioner of police of Hyderabad and DCP South Zone to submit a report on this issue by December 24 on this issue.
