Karnataka High Court permits Kambala with riders

Tulunadu’s traditional buffalo race, Kambala, can be held this year

Bengaluru: Tulunadu’s traditional buffalo race, Kambala a popular event held in slushy paddy fields between October and April, in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada regions, can be held this year.

The Karnataka High Court on Monday allowed organisers of the 700-year-old traditional sport to conduct the event, but with certain conditions.

The High Court has warned that the animals that take part in the races should not be subjected to any form of cruelty and that the tahsildar and the local police concerned would closely monitor the races and videograph them.

The state government had set aside funds for the races in the budget and most local MLAs and ministers are normally part of the committees associated with Kambala. This year, 24 races were scheduled between Nov. 15, and March 28, 2015.

But the SC’s ban on Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu had also put an end on Kambala.

The High Court observed that the deputy commissioner banned Kambala following a letter by the Animal Welfare Board to stop the buffalo/bull races under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960.
