Conversion in Aligarh banned

VHP plans conversion in Sonia’s Rae Bareli constituency

Lucknow: The stage is being set for a major showdown in Aligarh over the mass conversion programme with the state government having clamped prohibitory orders in the district and the Dharam Jagran Samiti announcing that it will hold its programme on schedule.

The Samiti has also threatened to move court if it is not allowed to go ahead with its programme. The VHP too has announced that it would convert 60 Muslim and Christian families to Hinduism in Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli constituency in January.

VHP’s Rae Bareli district unit chief Harish Chandra Sharma reasoned that since the said that the families in question themselves wanted to reconvert to Hinduism the conversion programme did not amount to communalism.

The district officials in Rae Bareli said that the state government was clear that such events cannot be allowed.

BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, who has been fiercely advocating re-conversion told reporters that if any Hindu had got converted in the past due to some reasons, then ‘Ghar Waapsi’ (homecoming or re-conversion) should be allowed.

“Those opposing ‘homecoming’ of non-Hindus should first oppose conversion of Hindus into other faiths in the Northeast,” the MP said adding that he would also back framing of an anti-conversion law in the country.

Mohit Agarwal, DIG of Alig-arh said that “under no circumstances,” the mass conversion programme slated for December 25 will be allowed.

The UP police has already lodged a case over the conversion of 57 Muslim families in Agra on December 7. The families, mostly ragpickers, claimed that they had been duped into changing their religion with the promised of ration cards and proper houses.
