Marcos, flypast enthrall spectators at Navy show
Kochi: They came in their thousands, the young and the old alike. They occupied every inch of space available on Park Avenue, Subhash Park and Rajendra Maidan. Some even climbed up trees. To see what the guardians of India’s waters are capable of doing.
And the Navy did not disappoint them. Sorties by aircraft and helicopters, simulation of commando operations and anti-piracy actions enthralled the audience for full two hours.
The operations demonstration by the Southern Naval Command started with a flypast by 15 helicopters and fixed wing aircraft of the Navy including the latest P8-I.
It was followed by a demonstration of landing of a Seaking helicopter on a moving warship, firing of weapons, special operations by the marine commandos from air and water and simulation of VBSS (visit, board, search and seizure) operations. Spectators watched with bated breath the manoeuvres by Advanced Light Helicopters.
Kochiites also got to watch a warship formation led by INS Kolkata, the largest indigenously built warship of the Indian Navy. INS Tir, INS Sharda, INS Sarvekshak, INS Kuthar, INS Kabra, INS Kalpeni and sail training ship INS Sudarshini made up the formation.
A group of six Fast Interceptor Crafts also displayed their operations prowess and the Navy’s coastal security and force protection capabilities.
Two contingents from INS Dronachrya performed a continuity drill. The programme, in which Governor Justice (Rtd) P. Sathasivam was the chief guest, ended with the ceremonial sunset ceremony which included ‘Beating Retreat’, performed by the Naval Band.
