Lucknow: The BJP seems determined to uproot the Gandhi legacy from Amethi. After Union minister Smriti Irani sent saris for poor women in Amethi during Diwali and promised to look after the constituency, it is now defence minister Manohar Parrikar who has turned towards Amethi to adopt a village under the Prime Minister’s model village scheme.
According to BJP sources, Mr Parrikar has obtained the details of Hariharpur village in Shahgarh block and also the problems confronting the people here.
He is scheduled to visit the village in the last week of December and will make a formal announcement about his decision to adopt Hariharpur.
Sources in the BJP said that Mr Parrikar had visited the village during the Lok Sabha campaign and he had been asked by the party leadership to adopt this particular village.
With Mr Parrikar now showing interest in Amethi, it is clear that the BJP wants to corner Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in his own constituency.
“The Gandhi family has been treating Amethi as its bastion and has never paid attention to the development of the district.
With two of our most powerful ministers Smriti Irani and Manohar Parrikar now focusing on Amethi, a lot will change in the constituency in the coming years and people will realise the difference between the Congress and the BJP.
The 2019 Lok Sabha elections will show the Congress out of Amethi,” said a senior BJP leader.
