Fourth phase records dismal turnout in Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand

Srinagar/ Ranchi: Only a few quarters within the eight segments of Srinagar could keep the trend of turning up in large numbers to vote that had already taken over the rest of Kashmir Valley going.
On Sunday, long queues of voters could be seen outside the polling stations only in select areas of Srinagar which with two other districts of the Valley Anantnag and Shopian and Jammu’s frontier Samba district went to the polls in the fourth of the 5-phased Assembly elections. The phase, in which 18 seats were going to polls, recorded a 49 per cent turnout.
Although the polling was by and large peaceful in all the districts, several incidents of clashes between supporters of rival political parties and alleged high handedness by two BJP candidates Javed Ahmad Qadri(Shopian) and Hina Bhat (Amirakadal) were reported in the Valley.
Sonawar constituency, where CM Omar Abdullah is contesting from a second seat, witnessed 44.17 per cent turnout. PDP patron’s Anantnag constituency also went to polls on Sunday. In Jharkhand, the penultimate phase of polls in 15 constituencies passed off peacefully today with 61.65 per cent of electorate casting their ballots.
