Wakf Board to reclaim sub leased land

Several lessees were paying just Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for commercial establishments

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Wakf Board cracked the whip on middlemen, who have squatted on Wakf properties based on lease agreements entered into several decades ago. The Wakf Board has decided to cancel all the lease deeds where a third party is paying rent to the middleman.

After a preliminary inquiry, the Board has noticed that the original lessees have been affecting Board revenue by not renewing their lease agreements for several years and are enjoying properties in prime localities. They are also minting money by letting out the properties to third parties.

M.J. Akbar, the special officer of the Board, said, “We noticed that several lease holders are letting out their properties located in commercial areas like Abids, MJ Market, Charminar, Nampally and Patthergatti.” He said that many of the lessees were paying just Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for the commercial establishments situated in Alladin Macca Madina Wakf at Patthergatti and also Nabikhana Wakf. However, they were receiving between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 by renting out the same premises on sub-lease to other parties.

He said the Board had taken over the properties of Alladin Macca Madina Wakf, which runs about five Trusts. It was found that the Board was getting a meagre revenue although each of these Trusts have the potential of earning crores of rupees annually.
