Talk to Army, civic boss told

Residents seek separate Safilguda-Tukaram Gate route

Hyderabad: While the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation needs two years to construct alternative routes, the Army has announced January 1 as the deadline for the second phase of traffic restrictions within the Cantonment.

There was nothing new in the alternative route plan submitted by the GHMC on Friday. It only came up with a vehicular movement report, which means that in over two months, the GHMC has done nothing, complained the residents.

Residents want a separate route from Safilguda to Tukaram Gate leading to East Marredpally. The Residents’ Welfare Associations have requested the GHMC commissioner to have a direct dialogue with the Army as it is ready to hand over land for the proposed alternative plan, following an approval from the ministry of defence. Instead of the GHMC submitting its action plan through the court, approaching the Army directly will save time as the deadline of the second phase of restriction is fast approaching, said the residents.

The United Federation of RWAs, which covers 6 lakh residents of the Malkajgiri and Alwal Circles, have requested the Army authorities to postpone the second phase of restrictions as the GHMC has plans to develop alternative roads within two years.

“The proposed traffic restrictions and the diverted traffic on already congested alternative roads from January 1 would make life difficult for those living in Malkajgiri,” said the RWA members.

The GHMC has sought land around areas of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board to develop a new road.

The Corporation is to inform the High Court that it needs 100 feet along the south and north boundaries of the Cantonment area, and 60 feet along the east and west peripheries to build a new road.

On Friday, the GHMC authorities stated that they would submit to the Court that development of alternate roads was not possible unless the Army agreed to provide adequate land around the Cantonment.

After getting the land, it would take another two years to build the road and until then the civilian traffic should be allowed to pass through the Cantonment.
