League hints at tweaking liquor policy at UDF meet
Kozhikode: Muslim League general secretary KPA Majeed has sought to nuance the party stand toward the liquor policy, saying the UDF will look at the policy regime, taking into account court decisions and practical issues raised by different quarters.
“If any change is essential to the present liquor policy, the UDF constituents should be convinced of reasons that necessitate a policy shift”, Mr Majeed said on Saturday.
Addressing reporters on the High Court observation over anomalies in liquor policy, Mr Majeed said the HC had pointed out some discrimination in the present policy.
The UDF would collectively decide how to resolve the anomalous situation, he said.
“Though Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had hinted at changes to the liquor policy in the wake of HC intervention, only UDF can finalize it”, he said, adding that IUML would back only changes that conformed to the spirit of the existing policy. “We are happy with the existing liquor policy and our opinion will be voiced at the UDF committee”, he said.
