Hurriyat goes soft on Pakistan talks

For Hurriyat, it's a significant shift from its perceived stance

Srinagar: In a significant shift from its perceived stance, Kashmir’s separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference alliance has said it will, in order to end the impasse with Pakistan, not insist on meeting its visiting government functionaries prior to their holding parleys with their Indian counterparts.

“We can meet them later after the two sides have had deliberations. As long as we also are considered as a part of the process of dialogue for peace and reconciliation, it doesn’t matter who talks with whom first,” said Kashmir’s chief Muslim cleric and amalgam faction chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

In August, India cancelled talks with Pakistan after accusing it of interfering in its’ internal affairs. The move came after Pakistan’s High Commissioner in Delhi consulted Kashmiri separatist leaders ahead of the two countries’ foreign secretaries meeting in Islamabad.
