They were trying to light a stove at Jawaharnagar in Jubilee Hills
Hyderabad: Two children died and another one was injured in a blast while they were trying to light a stove at Jawaharnagar in Jubilee Hills on Friday.
The children were planning to cook tomato curry after their parents had left and had tried to light firewood allegedly using a spirit solution known for its highly inflammable property. It is suspected that they used a large quantity. The fire from the stove spread to the container filled with the spirit resulting in a blast.
Officials said that the spirit solution is used for fire sequences in film shootings. The deceased have been identified as seven-year-old Keerthiveni, a Class II student, and 13-year-old Narasamma. Keerthiveni’s five-year-old brother Yogi was injured in the blast and is being treated.
Keerthiveni and Yogi are the kids of Adinarayana and Hema while and Narsamma’s parents are Danaiah and Saraswathi. They are all labourers and the families lived in a common compound.
According to the Jubilee Hills police, after their parents left for work at around 9.30 am, the three kids decided to cook something. They placed some firewood on the stove and doused the same with the spirit.
“As soon as they lit the stove, high flames rose and spread instantly to the spirit container resulting in the blast. The kids were thrown against the wall by the intensity of the blast and received grievous burns and injuries, ” said S. Venkat Reddy, Inspector, Jubilee Hills, adding that even stones kept by the stove flew up, injuring the victims.
Locals who heard the blast rushed to the house. “We heard a loud sound. When we entered, we saw three of them on the ground injured and bleeding. We called the ambulance and rushed them to the hospital,” said a neighbor.
The children were shifted to the Osmania General Hospital where Keerthiveni and Narsamma succumbed to their injuries. A case under Section 174 of the CrPC was registered and is being investigated. Narsamma had sustained about 58 per cent burns while Keerthiveni had about 70 per cent burns.
West Zone DCP A. Venkateshwara Rao and senior officials examined the spot. A CLUES team was also pressed into action and samples, including broken pieces of the spirit container, were collected.
Officials said Narsamma’s mother Saraswathi had earlier worked at Saradhi Studios in Ameerpet for a couple of months. She had got the spirit from there. “While working there she had brought about three litres of spirit home.
This substance was used in fire sequences during film shoots. Saraswathi used the spirit to light the stove. The mishap is suspected to have occurred as a large quantity of the spirit was used,” said Mr Venkat Reddy.
