AOC curbs: Locals threaten to stop tax
Around six lakh residents may decide not to pay their property taxes
HYDERABAD: Around six lakh residents may decide not to pay their property taxes if the GHMC does not immediately attend to the AOC traffic restriction issue.
“We won’t pay taxes if the GHMC does not submit the alternative route plan to the Army,” said residents of Malkajgiri and Alwal Circles who have also decided to protest at the GHMC head office on the night of December 31.
The Army has announced its second phase of restrictions from January 1, 2015. Around 60 Resident Welfare Associations under Circle 17 (Malkajgiri, East-West Anandbagh, Neredmet commercial areas) will meet on Saturday and make an official announcement about not paying tax.
“In 2013, the GHMC had collected Rs 89 crore from Malkajgiri and Rs 30 crore from Alwal towards property tax. The survey on traffic is complete and the same has been submitted to the GHMC engineering wing. However, the Corporation is not submitting the same to the Army. All 60 RWAs are contemplating not paying taxes for 2014-15,” stated members of the RWAs.
“We have tried to make GHMC contact the Army for alternative routes through AOC for civilian traffic, but for the last two months, the GHMC engineers have dodged the matter stating that the survey is on. It seems as if the GHMC is not bothered about the Malkajgiri citizens’ traffic woes,” said B.T. Srinivasan, executive vice-president of United Federation of RWAs.
