Women’s safety is cab driver’s lookout

Operators must get drivers to behave
HYDERABAD: The special drive on taxi operators continued in Hyderabad and Cyberabad for the third day on Friday with transport officials and the Cyberabad police department conducting a meeting with cab operators.
In the meeting conducted by Cyberabad police commissioner, C.V. Anand and other senior officials, issues pertaining to women’s safety and amendments needed in the Motor Vehicle Act to get online cab services in the rules were discussed.
Mr Anand said that till the amendments were made, cab operators would have to take responsibility of women’s safety and ensure that the drivers behave properly with women passengers. He also told the operators to check the antecedents and criminal history of drivers before appointing them.
All cab operators were asked to register and apply for QR code stickers before December 31 or face serious consequences.
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, in mega cities like Hyderabad, cab services should have GPRS installed, with control rooms monitoring their cabs 24x7. However, very few were implementing this, the commissioner said.
Meanwhile, on the third day of the drive, transport officials seized 34 cabs, which were plying without proper documents, said transport joint commissioner, T. Raghunath.
