Manchester United rushed things with David Moyes, says Emile Heskey
Emile Heskey donned the England national jersey from 1999-2010 and had a remarkable career in the Barclays Premier League, appearing for Leicester City, Liverpool and more. Known for his exploits during his time at Anfield, Heskey - in Mumbai to promote English Premier League - told this correspondent about the current Liverpool team, the Indian Super League and many more. Excerpts…
What is your take on the current Liverpool team, compared to the time when you played there?
When I went there, I was 22. You make me feel old (laughs). They have some good players. But they have lost their talisman Luis Suarez to Barcelona, and Daniel Sturridge due to injury. Both of them contributed last season. It is a transitional period and chance for youngsters to step up. It is going to take them time to adjust.
Is Suarez and Sturridge the only reason why Liverpool did well last year?
No, of course not. Suarez did make a massive difference but he was also suspended for 10 games if you remember. I would say the whole team combined well.
Liverpool drew with Basel and crashed out of Champions League. This Sunday, do you think that they can crack the Red Devil code again given their mental state now?
They are low on confidence. It is one of those days. But if one remembers the game against Tottenham Hotspur (Liverpool won 3-0), they’ll know what this side can do. They have had their matches too. Although they are going to the big stage, Old Trafford, but you can’t write them off at all. They did win against United last season but then yes, as I said, they have lost two good players this season.
Brendan Rodgers has been receiving a lot of flak from all quarters for his team combination, some fans are calling for his removal too. What do you think?
When you are a team, you are going to be questioned regardless of good performances or otherwise. He needs time. Last season, we saw he wants to play with the team which performs. Liverpool style of football is good to the eye. I think he should be given time and bring other talented players on board like he did before.
Do you think Manchester United rushed things with David Moyes?
Yes, most definitely. The only thing that could have led to his downfall was United winning the league season before he came. The expectations were very high but it was unrealistically high. I don’t think they had the best squad too. But that’s football for you.
Do you see any change in Manchester United under Louis van Gaal?
Not really, they are still the same in terms of approach. I haven’t seen much at least. They have better individual players, but as a team, it is the same outfit which Moyes had to nurture.
Are you following Indian Super League, your old friends and colleagues – David James and company, have been in India for two months now.
Yes, I am aware of it. I was supposed to come too, but I thought it is too early for me. But in the future, most definitely, why not? It is a great opportunity for the Indian footballers. Not everyone gets a chance to play alongside Alessandro Del Piero.
How was David Beckham as a teammate? People in India have always been crazy about that man.
Oh, Becks was straightforward. Serious guy. He knew his job. The whole world knows it.
According to you, who is the best English footballer in the recent times?
Wayne Rooney. He has skills, pace and is a finisher.
Is this your first time in India, do you like it?
Yes it is my first. I was only wondering why people are saying it’s winter. When I left England, it was about two degrees (laughs) and look here, it is so humid.
