Congress creates uproar in RS over BJP MP eulogising Mahatma Gandhi's killer Nathuram Godse
New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Thursday witnessed angry scenes with the Opposition strongly protesting against an event held in Maharashtra last month to “eulogise” Mahatma Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse.
Much to the ruling BJP’s embarrassment, its Unnao MP, Sakshi Maharaj, had to retract his earlier statement where he had described Godse as a “nationalist.”
“If I have said anything by mistake, I withdraw my statement. Godse was not a nationalist,” he said.
Congress MP Hussain Dalwai, who raised this issue during Zero Hour, demanded that the government should condemn the event, “Mahaan Krantikari Nathuram Godse Shaurya Divas”, and attacked the ruling party, saying “you promise development but your acts create divide between society.”
Mr Dalwai said he had even asked the Maharashtra CM to take action against the organisers of the event.
Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “This is not acceptable. Mahatma Gandhi’s killer, whosoever it may be, we are against it... We do not accept any honour to Mahatma Gandhi’s killers.”
As members continued their protest and the House witnessed acrimonious exchanges between both the sides, Mr Kurien adjourned the proceedings for 10 minutes just before noon.
