Flights from West Africa to be rerouted

Centre has taken this measure to ensure that the Ebola virus doesn’t enter the country

New Delhi: All travellers from countries affected by the Ebola epidemic will now have to travel through seven major airports in India where additional safety measures will be put in place.

The airports to where flights will be rerouted are — Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata.

The Centre has decided that people arriving from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone will have to travel through one of these airports to ensure that they undergo rigorous safety checks before entering the country.

Union health ministry officials say that additional thermal scanners, health counters and isolation facilities will soon be put in place.

Related ministries like civil aviation, missions abroad and all international airlines have been alerted so that rerouting can be started without any further delay, a health ministry official said.

“The aim is to have better control and regulation so that the virus doesn’t enter the country,” the official said.

Recently, the US started redirecting flights from affected countries even as Republicans and Democrats pushed for a flight ban.
