77-year-old Andhra Pradesh murder accused bipolar, let off in United States

He will now be treated at Lincoln Regional Centre for further testing and treatment

Hyderabad: A 77-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh, who stabbed his son-in-law in Lincoln in Nebraska in the United States, was sent for treatment as the court on Tuesday found that he has been suffering from bipolar disorder.
A retired teacher from Tirupati, 77-year old Bayapa Lingala, who claimed to be suffering from a bipolar disorder, has been charged with second-degree murder. His bail is set at $1 million and his Indian passport has been impounded. Lingala faces 70 years in prison if convicted. He will now be treated at Lincoln Regional Centre for further testing and treatment. A Telugu interpreter has been appointed by the court.
The victim, Sujay Nooka, an engineer, worked at Lincoln Industries as a supply chain manager. Sujay is survived by his father, his wife Uma, brothers Vijay and Hari, and three children Avani, 12, Akash, nine and Arnav, four.
According to the Lincoln police as per a report on its website, Sujay was murdered on the night of August 5, 2014. He was found with a stab wound to the chest. He was taken to hospital. At 2.51 am, he was pronounced dead.
Sujay’s father-in-law Bayapa Lingala was arrested for second-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit felony. Bayapa, who lived with the victim, was still at home when officers arrived. He was taken into custody. The knife, believed to have been used in the assault, was found at the scene.
Sujay’s wife, Dr Nooka Uma, told police that her father, who suffers from a bipolar disorder stabbed her husband with an eight-inch knife.
According to Lancaster County court Dr Uma Nooka had prescribed medication to treat her father’s disorder.
She told police that Lingala had wanted to return to India and she had opposed it as he could not take care of himself. Sujay’s father Lakshmi Nooka, who was at the scene, testified to police that he saw Lingala stab his son.
