Maldives to resume normal water supply next week

The capital is located on a low-lying island that has no natural water source

Colombo: Water supply in the Maldives' capital won't fully resume until next week but the government of the Indian Ocean archipelago says it is has offered alternatives to ease the weeklong cutoff.

Last week's fire in the only water treatment plant shut off water for more than 100,000 residents.

Government minister Mohamed Shareef told reporters in Sri Lanka on Wednesday that the worst is over and he's "relatively confident" that normalcy will be restored in the coming week.

In the meantime, some water is being distributed through bottles and pipes though pressure is the problem.

The capital is located on a low-lying island that has no natural water source and depends entirely on treated sea water.

India, Sri Lanka, China and Bangladesh have dispatched bottled water and floating desalination plants.
