Boxer Sarita Devi accepts Asian Games bronze medal

Indian pugilist – banned by AIBA for indefinite period – finally receives Incheon honour

Mumbai: According to reports, Indian boxer L Sarita Devi has finally received her Asian Games bronze medal from Indian Olympic Association (IOA) which she refused earlier.

A week back, the sports ministry had appealed to the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) to revoke the suspension imposed on the pugilist due to her initial rejection of the medal.

Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also sent a letter to AIBA asking to reconsider the decision of banning the sportsperson.

Sarita declined the bronze medal in the mega event after the verdict of the match – which went against her – was controversial. At the podium, she had an emotional outburst and handed her medal to the silver medallist.

The sports fraternity stood behind her since the announcement of her suspension. Even cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar appealed to the entire nation to support the woman.

However, it remains to be seen if AIBA withdraws the ban.
