Clean-up by Army criticised by locals
Hyderabad: Civil and defence forces’ deployment led to traffic jam during the peak working hours.
T. Narsimhalu, a resident of Ward 5 of the SCB, said, “Firstly, the locality falls under civilian area. However, since Sunday, the Army has been objecting to dumping waste at the locality’s yard. This has been the practice for the past 50 years. There are 1,000 families dwelling in Mahatma Gandhi Nagar. The Cantonment Board’s truck hardly comes to collect waste, therefore, all the 1,000 households dump garbage at this site. We don’t have any other dumping yard.”
“Earlier, the entire locality was forced to dump waste near the East Marredpally Peddamma temple, which hurt our sentiments. The Cantonment Board should either give us a dumping yard or allow us to throw garbage adjacent to the main road,” added G. Madhavi, another resident.
“Waste is being dumped on the main roads, which is attracting animals, hindering the free flow of traffic. Recently, an Army officer’s vehicle bumped into a buffalo eating garbage. We have only cleaned the site and have advised residents to follow the same,” said a jawan who didn’t want to be named.
SCB sanitation supervisor M. Devender said, “The Army is concerned about waste being dumped on the main road near the Allahabad gate. The Army officials have cleaned the site, but they have not occupied it. The SCB authorities will take a call on this soon.”
Following the protest, North zone police officials, including the assistance commissioner of police and surrounding stations’ circle inspectors were deployed at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar on Tuesday evening.
