Patna: Acute financial crunch led Bihar police assistant sub-inspector Birender Singh to commit suicide, as he could not pay bribe.
Singh had not been paid his salary for 16 months as he could not pay a Rs 40,000 bribe to the officials.
The Bihar Human Rights Commission has taken up the case and has asked the state police department to explain the situation.
According to Singh’s wife Chanda Devi, he had been unable to pay the fee for his son, who is studying at IIT-Roorkee.
“His continuous requests for the release of payments failed get any result, which led him to take such step. He was asked to cough up Rs 40,000 as a bribe and he couldn’t pay,” said Ms Devi.
