Badaun case: CBI likely to file final report tomorrow

Sources said the agency will drop charges against five accused

New Delhi: CBI is likely to file its final report on Thursday in connection with the probe into mysterious death of two teenaged girls in Badaun of western Uttar Pradesh concluding that they had committed suicide after the elder one's affair with local boy got busted.

CBI sources said the agency will state that the charges of alleged rape and murder have not been established in the forensic and circumstantial evidence gathered by the agency and the two girls had allegedly committed suicide according to chain of events gathered by it.

The sources said the agency will close the investigations with dropping of charges against five accused - Pappu, Awadhesh and Urvesh Yadav (brothers) and constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav - named as prime accused by the state police for alleged rape and murder of the girls.

They said a recommendation for probe against state police officers for botched up investigation will be made.

The sources said the case will also be an example of how can system of post-mortems be improved to help investigators arrive at correct conclusion.

The final report will also mention questionable actions of fathers of the girls, an uncle and main witness Nazru, also a distant relative, leaving it to the court to take further action, they said.

The girls, who were 14 and 15, were found hanging from a mango tree near their village on May 28, a day after they were reported missing resulting in media criticism of the state government for lax law and order problem. Even the Secretary General of United Nations Ban Ki Moon had expressed concerns.

The theory of rape and murder fell flat after CBI concluded on the basis of forensic reports received from three-member medical board, Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory, Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, FSL, Gandhinagar among others.

"Based on around 40 scientific reports, CBI has concluded that the two minor girls in the Badaun case had not been raped and murdered as had been alleged in the FIR. Investigation has concluded that it is a case of suicide," CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad had said.
