Vijayawada road dangerous for 2 wheelers, pedestrians

Heavy vehicles going towards Vijayawada were seen as being responsible for increase in accidents

Hyderabad: LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram and Hayathnagar are the most unsafe for motorists in Cyberabad. The number of accidents, including those involving deaths, are twice that recorded by other police stations.

The roads passing through these areas lead to the highways to Mumbai and Vijayawada and have become a major cause of concern for the safety of pedestrians and two-wheeler riders, who count for the maximum number of victims.

Hayathnagar recorded 49 accident cases, followed by LB Nagar with 44 and Vanasthalipuram with 31 accidents in just a couple of months.

In comparison, other parts of Cyberabad recorded fewer than 20 cases.

Most victims are said to be pedestrians and two-wheeler riders, who are hit by either by other two-wheelers or four-wheelers and, sometimes, heavy vehicles, heading for the highways.

Especially on the national highway going towards Vijayawada, heavy vehicles were were seen as being responsible for a considerable number of accidents.

After carrying out accident mapping to identify the most accident-prone areas, the police sat down to analyse the high rate of road mishaps in LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram and Hayathnagar.

They found that the roads were facing severe lack of civic infrastructure, footover bridges, zebra crossings, and streetlights.

“We have started working on these areas, and have taken several precautionary measures which can prevent accidents.

There is a decrease in the number of accidents compared to last year,” said Traffic DCP Avinash Mohanty.

He said that Cyberabad saw 90 fewer road deaths than 2013 due to the police cracking down on wrong-side driving and closing certain intersections and junctions.

“We are able to bring down the number of accident cases even in LB Nagar and Hayathnagar,” Mr Mohanty said.

To help pedestrians, who are the most common victims, traffic officials have asked the government to provide 30 foot overbridges, street lights and zebra crossing on roads on priority.

But there is nothing like taking care of yourself. Officials asked pedestrians to be more cautious and follow rules while crossing roads.
