Tamil Nadu Chief Minister off to Delhi for plan panel meeting

A new body replacing the Planning Commission is likely to be unveiled

Chennai: Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Saturday left for Delhi to participate in Chief Ministers' conference convened by the Centre on Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who recently announced the disbanding of the six-decade-old Planning Commission, will chair the meeting.

According to secretariat sources, issues between the state and Centre will be discussed and each state's economic policies reviewed. A new body replacing the Planning Commission is likely to be unveiled. Issues like proposals of Karnataka and Kerala to construct new dams and retrieval of Katchateevu island from Sri Lanka to ensure the fishing rights of TN fishermen are on the state's agenda, sources said.

The TN Assembly passed resolutions that the Union water ministry should not accord technical sanction for any new dam projects proposed by the two neighbouring states.

The state also sent communiqués on the kerosene subsidy issue. The Centre is likely to discuss issues related to economy and Aadhaar card's integration process, secretariat sources added.
