Chennai: The police seized around 200 kg of unaccounted silver bars from four persons during vehicle checks near Foreshore Estate on Friday night.
The four persons were carrying 401 kg of silver from Sowcarpet to a jewellery shop in Salem in a car when the police intercepted them.
The occupants of the car were identified as Kirubakaran, Karthikeyan, Murugan and Venkatesan.
They were carrying four suitcases of silver bars and jewellery along with them, the police said.
The quartet had told the police that they bought the jewellery from a shop in Parry’s Corner. However, they were in possession of receipts for purchase of only 201 kg of silver after which the police seized the jewellery and handed them over to the commercial tax department officials. Further investigations are on.
