Security beef up for December 6 across Tamil Nadu

The day marked demolition of Babri Masjid structure

Chennai: In view of the anniversary of the demolition of Babri masjid structure on Saturday, the state police has beefed up security in Tamil Nadu. According to a senior state police official, police deployment has been stepped up in major cities, towns and district headquarters across the state. “Over 60,000 police personnel would be involved in security-related duty across the state, while in Chennai alone as many as 18,000 personnel will be deployed to make sure no untoward incident takes place on the 22nd anniversary of demolition of the structure,” the officer added.

The officer, however, added that there is no specific threat but the security has been increased based on general alert.Four additional commissioners, four joint commissioners and 19 deputy commissioners would supervise the security work in the city, said a city police spokesperson on Friday. Across the state, vehicle checks have been intensified.

Armed security men had been posted at many places, including the Central railway station here, with GRP and RPF coordinating the security measures including screening of baggage. Similarly, security has been further tightened at airports and bus terminals beside Central and state government establishments.

RSS kar sevaks had demolished the Babri mosque in Ayodhya, in Uttar Pradesh, on December 6, 1992. The Sangh Parivar believes that the mosque was built after demolishing a Ram temple in Ayodhya, where, according the Ramayana, Lord Ram was born.
