Hyderabad: The prime accused in the Railway Recruitment Cell scam, Malothu Machender, senior signal engineer P. Rajashekhar and Prakash, who supplied electronic devices, were arrested by the Special Operations Team (SOT) of Cyberabad on Friday. The number of Railway employees involved in this scam has reached nine. Officials say that around 40 people including a few insiders are yet to be arrested in this scam.
The prime accused, Machender, a Railway employee working as grade I technician at North Lalaguda, who was on the run ever since the scam was busted by SOT, was caught on Friday. Senior signal engineer P. Rajashekhar who was the in-charge Railway officer at the exam centre played an important role in leaking the paper through one Mahender, who is absconding.
Rajashekhar used to give one of the leftover papers to Mahender before the exam starts, and he in turn used to take the picture of the papers and Whatsapp it to other group members. Meanwhile, the other arrested person Chandra Prakash Kumar supplied electronic devices which were purchased from New Delhi and used in the scam, said officer on special duty (OSD) E. Ramchandra Reddy.
He added the gang was so advanced in using technology that even the portraits of gods were fitted with spy cameras. Exam pads and lockets had cameras and microphones in it. All the material were seized during the arrest of Machender.
This is not the first time Machender has engaged in scams. In 2006 with the help of an Ayurvedic doctor, he got the question paper leaked and gave it to 11 students. They all got jobs in the Railways.
Later, in 2008 and 2010 he tried to procure the RRB question paper with the help of Swamy Naik, the then Senior Commercial Manager at Rail Nilayam, but could not succeed. In 2013 he tried to use electronic devices in VRO exams but dropped the plan.
In 2008 he hatched a plan along with Railway employee Nagaraju, who runs a coaching centre at Moula-Ali and was arranging candidates for copying by charging Rs 5 lakh each. Machender lured Raja Sekhar who was the in-charge employee at the exam centre by giving him Rs 50,000 a day to leak the paper. So far 33 persons have been arrested and about 40 persons are yet to be arrested.
