Presidency College declares indefinite closure after stir
Chennai: The Presidency College in the city declared the college to be closed indefinitely from Thursday after students staged a sit-in protest on Wednesday seeking that the college authorities revoke the dismissal of 15 students who were arrested after they attacked two others from the same college two months ago. Prof. Paramananda Perumal, principal, said that several students held a protest, asking the college to intervene and have the police let the 15 students out on bail.
“We cannot revoke the dismissal of the 15 students who are still in jail as there is a case still pending against them. So to avoid any untoward incident on campus we closed the college,” he said. This took numerous students by surprise who found the gates locked with a notice about the closure.
“It is not proper on the part of the college authorities to close the college as this will affect us. The college is closed whenever a clash occurs. The college authorities should ask the police to remove students who get involved in clashes rather than closing the college. We have to complete the syllabus and take the examination on time. This will hamper our studies,” Suresh Kumar, a student, said.
