PM Modi’s response fails to cut ice in Rajya Sabha, house paralysed for third day

PM's attempts to buy peace with Opposition failed, as Rajya Sabha remained paralysed

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence on Thursday over the controversial remark by his ministerial colleague Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti. Intervening in the Rajya Sabha, he expressed strong disapproval of Ms Jyoti’s recent remarks, that have led to a furore across the country.

But Mr Modi’s attempts to buy peace with the Opposition failed, as the Rajya Sabha was paralysed for the third consecutive day, the Opposition unrelenting on its demand that the minister be removed immediately.

The PM spoke in the Upper House three days after the row erupted over Ms Jyoti’s remarks at a public meeting here, but the Opposition refu-sed to accept her apology.

In his brief intervention in Zero Hour, Mr Modi said: “I was informed about the statement that caused the controversy on the day the BJP parliamentary party was to meet. In the meeting, I strongly disapproved of the remarks and said we should avoid using such language.”
