Mega lok adalat on Saturday

14 lakh cases, including pre-litigation cases will be settled

Chennai: Elaborate arrangements have been made for holding a mega, national lok adalat in the state on December 6 to settle over 14 lakh cases, including pre-litigation cases, said member-secretary and district judge, Tamil Nadu Legal Services Authority (TNLSA), Teekaa Raman. Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said for the fist time, the district and state consumer disputes redressal commission, debts recovery tribunal, debt recovery appellate tribunals and pension-related cases would be taken up in the adalat.


For the first time, TNLSA will take up cases related to disputes in the revenue department, telephone bills, metro water bills, EB tariff bill and property tax tariff in the mega lok adalat. Disputes relating to registration of birth and death will also be settled in the adalat. Over 300 benches are constituted to settle the cases, of which TNLSA has set up 27 benches. A total of 13 nationalised banks will be participating in the adalat and settle long-pending cases.

In the national lok adalat held in November 2013, over 13.77 lakh cases were settled and litigants awarded a total compensation of Rs 1,140 crore. Similarly, in the state mega lok adalat held on April 4, 2014, over 15 lakh cases were disposed of and '940 crore given as total compensation, Raman added. Cases pending in the Madras high court and its bench in Madurai will also be taken up during the adalat. The adalat is organised based on the directions of the National Legal Services Authority.
