Kerala CM hints at tweaking liquor policy, Sudheeran not game
CM may make some practical changes within the policy framework
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the state would adopt a practical approach and tweak the Excise Policy accordingly without tampering with its fundamentals. The adverse affect of the policy on tourism, the legal complexities of disallowing wine and beer parlours and the hundreds of bar workers rendered jobless were some of the issues that seems to have prompted what has been termed a “practical shift” in policy.
“We will not move an inch backward from the policy,” the Chief Minister said in the Assembly on Wednesday. “But we will see what practical changes can be made within the framework of the policy.” Mr Chandy was responding to an adjournment motion moved by CPM leader Dr Thomas Isaac.
The Chief Minister said that various practical issues were being considered. There are the recommendations from the tourism sector, he said. “Then there is the problem of unemployment,” he said. “We have assured that the jobless will be rehabilitated,” he added. There was also the High Court observation about Bevco outlets to contend with.
